What’s an RV-7A?

An RV-7A is a home-built aircraft that carries two-passengers and cruises at about 200 mph with a 180 HP engine. The kits are manufactured by Vans Aircraft in Aurora, Oregon and require about 2000 manhours to build. Wing span is 25 feet and empty weight is about 1100 lbs. To date there are over 6800 Vans aircraft flying.

Construction is virtually all aluminum with a few fiberglass parts for wing tips, etc. Owners rave about the responsive flying qualities which put most general aviation aircraft in this category to shame. They also rave about the quality of the kits which helps builders be successful on what is without doubt a major project by any measure. One attractive feature of a home built aircraft is you can customize it to your specific style and taste. Here is a great example of a nicely built RV-7A. I hope mine ends up looking as nice as this one.

Here is another really good example with a slider canopy instead of the tip-up style.
